"A great teacher of art, with whom I studied anatomy said that an artist should learn to see the human body as a kind of landscapewith all the subtle, sensuous forms of a pastoral countryside. When I heard him say this my memory flashed to how as a boy, I used to see human contours in the soft, wind-sculpted hills near my home in California, so I never forgot his advice. Torsoscape I is an effort to do justice to this wonderful idea, in memory of a great teacher."
